Sea / River Power Plants (Free Flow Turbines, as well)

While wind generation is rapidly expanding and is an important piece of solving the world's energy needs, wind resources are limited, power generated by wind is not predictable and "view shed" and "not-in- my-back-yard" issues restrict development of wind projects. In fact, view shed issues have become a major obstacle for develop of most projects, regardless of their societal benefits.

Ocean power generation, on the other hand, has essentially unlimited development potential, is predictable, if not constant. Although power generated from ocean energy can be directly "plugged into" coastal load centers and remote communities, it is not restricted to these markets. The market for renewable energy is virtually unlimited. In European Union countries, for example, a considerable premium over fossil fuel generation is currently being paid for "green" power. There are many potential sites for ocean current energy in Northern Europe near the United Kingdom, in Southern Europe near the mouth of the Mediterranean Sea, as well as off the coasts of South America, Africa and Japan, and many of these countries are providing special incentives to ocean renewable energy projects. In addition, there are countless numbers of island communities where ocean currents accelerate around and between land masses. Coastal communities throughout the world will be the primary beneficiaries of ocean power due to the presence of strong ocean and tidal currents and insufficient energy supply.

Tidal in stream energy occurs due to the moving mass of water with speed and direction as caused by the gravitational forces of the sun and the moon, and centrifugal and inertial forces on the earth's waters. Due to its proximity to the earth, the moon exerts roughly twice the tide raising force of the sun. The gravitational forces of the sun and moon and the centrifugal/inertial forces caused by the rotation of the earth around the center of mass of the earth-moon system create two "bulges" in the earth's oceans: one closest to the moon, and the other on the opposite side of the globe. The best tidal flow converters efficient convert both low and high velocity stream energy that we cal RotoJET  turbines. Several advanced  patented  RotoJET  turbine systems have been developed.

During last 10 years we are developing a lot of hydro-kinetic power applications. We have tested ducted and non ducted hydro kinetic turbines. The ducted hydro kinetic applications are more heavy and costly. They require more often and expensive maintenance.

The prevailing world wide practice in zero head tidal plants now is to implement simple and low cost duct less Savonius machines. But they show low efficiency. That is why we have focused on number of options to increase the Savonius machines efficiency.

We find that the around rotor water speed and turbulence affect significantly rotor efficiency. We have developed a mats model for it and have developed respective simulator. Based on both the simulator and water test we propose to you number of options as follow:

As the first option is to use duct less turbines to keep bigger the around rotor water speed and to reduce cost and pay-back of a complete hydro kinetic power plant.

As the second option is to use shaft less Savonius turbines to reduce the around rotor and wake turbulence. It is more important for the hydro kinetic farms and pontoon power barges.

As the third option is to reduce periphery turbine energy losses by application of smaller turbine scoops (instead of 180 degree semi cylinder - smaller)

As the next option is to reduce after wake turbulence by two blade open center Savonius turbine design (negative overlap) with 180 degree offset.

The listed above options in interaction with our radical new ROTOJET designs increasing non ducted Savonius turbine efficiency significantly.

The new ROTOJET designs enhance the Savonius rotor cost by several %. That is why it is the best energy and economical feasible solution.

The incoming water passes through the open center and it gets out at the back. The turbine hollow scoops are forming the jet channel, which is in the periphery of the turbine. The jet stream induces the additional rotational jet force.

A new invented vortex jet turbine. The vertical axis of the turbine is coaxial with the vertical vortex axis. It is a savonius type turbine with hollow blades. Each blade forms an accelerating hydro-jet stream. In the opposite direction of the jet stream, a jet force is formed in the periphery of the rotor. The jet force increases the rotational rate of the rotor.

Axial JET Hydrokinetic Turbines
We have developed two basic project of the Axial JET Hydrokinetic Turbines:

  • First type is applicable in relative low water speed currents or for bottom fixed stream energy converter units. It is a basically non-ducted JET-drag axial flow turbine with fixed blades variable speed operated.

  • The second type is applicable in medium to high water speed currents for pontoon supported structure. It is a non-ducted fixed blades turbine with JET-lift blades variable speed operated.

Both developed (patent pending) tidal/river turbines JET/Drag and JET/Lift are relatively low cost solutions operating with high capacity factor and generating low cost power.

Every axial rotating machine (e.g. turbine) in water creates vortex that forces water tangentially. Tip blade JET channel/s redirect/s the forced water to tip JET stream/s. As a result of the JET stream/s in opposite direction is creating tip JET force/torque.

Free river/tidal turbine is several to 15 meters in diameter. It is possible to develop more than 1 MW unit.

The non-ducted hydrokinetic power generation relies simply on the extraction of energy from the natural river velocity of water, these power systems can be placed with minimal infrastructure or environmental impacts.

The JET rotors on the above described turbines turn slowly. A ship's propellers, by comparison, typically run 5 - 10 times as fast. The risk of impact from JET rotor blades is small, because the marine creatures that swim in strong currents tend to be agile, and can avoid slow-moving underwater obstructions.

Applications of new JET Turbines Technology

Because hydrokinetic power generation relies simply on the extraction of energy from the natural velocity of water, these power systems can be placed into sources of flowing water with minimal infrastructure or environmental impacts.

Hydrokinetic energy is not a new application of the concept of using the energy from moving water to create electricity - “dam-less” as opposed to conventional dam wall hydro power or other man-made barricading structures behind which potential energy in the water is stored – water wheels of various types have been used in numerous applications for centuries.

The ideal location for a hydrokinetic turbine is to be located in deep strong flowing rivers or immediately downstream from an existing conventional hydropower plant where electric transmission wires and interconnection facilities are located, and where the energy remaining in the water current exiting from the turbines in the dam can be reused. Small Power Barges in a range of 5 to 30 KW could easily be floated in channeled and engineered waterways such as irrigation canals.

Hydrokinetic technology is designed for use in river and ocean currents with a horizontal axis turbine. Almost like mounting several Pelton wheels on the same shaft but better, as the advantages of a vertically submerged blade has similar performance characteristics to a horizontally mounted Cross flow turbine. The core of our patented technology is in the design of the turbine blades. The leading edge offers reduced resistance, while the trailing edge is aerodynamically optimised to reduce the Flat Dynamic Effect. The turbine is horizontally mounted on a catamaran type hull or barge and partially submerged into the water flowing beneath the barge.

In an open-river setting, hydrokinetic power projects will have a capacity factor (CF) of better than 98% because power will be generated by using a constant water current to the effect that it would be considered a “base load” plant.

The rotational speed of the turbine is very low, and can be stopped from spinning in a matter of seconds through automated fault sensing equipment and the turbine can be lifted out of the water and placed in service mode in under 2 minutes.

The barge on which the turbines are mounted (and the turbines themselves) is able to cope with fluctuations in water levels, substantial velocity increases, and direct impacts from large and fast-moving debris, (the turbine is self-cleaning for small debris and floating plant material) and the only flow parameter that would decrease power output would be a decrease in the flow rate of the water underneath the barge. During extraordinary adverse conditions or flood events, the barge could be removed from the river if necessary.

Since the power is proportional to the cube of velocity and density of the water, a slower flow rate of (say) 1 meter per second will yield less energy than a flow rate of (say) 3 meters per second, and depending on location and other factors such as depth, our turbine blade size would be engineered for optimal performance given specific site conditions. For instance, the turbine blade could be long and broad for slow moving deep currents, or shorter and thinner for fast moving shallow currents.

The power barge is designed to last for at least 20 years lifespan, and because of very few moving parts, will have very low maintenance costs and downtime.

First ever ROTOJET. Jet / Lift / Drag turbine is the most economical feasible solution of dam less hydropower. And for wind applications as well. The ROTOJET design is very low cost in both manufacturing and operation. See below a basic comparison of different types of wind/hydrokinetic turbines:
